Celebrating Christmas

bigstock-Christian-Christmas-scene-50792168 [Converted] I know, I know… it’s Thanksgiving week. So why am I jumping to Christmas? Don’t we want to talk about being thankful? What about the turkey… the backyard football games… the naps… the thanks? I really do hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving, but in order to get our families ready for Christmas, we need to start talking about it now.

At our church, we have tons of ways that families can help others at Christmas… it’s called “Giving Christmas”. Included are tons of ideas and suggestions on ways that you and your family can give Christmas away to others and help share the Gospel all over the world. As part of our efforts to help families get ready for Christmas, we also wanted to provide some practical ideas for Celebrating Christmas.

The season of Advent begins this coming Sunday, November 30th. The word advent means “arrival” or “coming” and at Advent, we celebrate the first coming of Jesus, but we also look forward to His second coming. You don’t need any reminders about Christmas shopping or Holiday ads. But I did want to provide some solid, practical ideas and resources to help your family celebrate Christmas for what it truly is.

Advent Resources:

The Advent Book by INCM (Free PDF Download, we purchased the rights to distribute)

Prepare Him Room: Celebrating the Birth of Jesus Family Devotional, Marty Machowski

Good News of Great Joy: Daily Readings for Advent, John Piper (Free Download)

The Dawning of Indestructible Joy: Daily Readings for Advent, John Piper (Free Download)

Here is a fun idea… how about making your own Advent Wreath or Calendar for the house? For some great DIY ideas, check out Pinterest and search for “Advent Wreath” or “Advent Calendar“. I hope you will find a way to make this Christmas Christ-centered and perhaps even start a new family tradition this year. As families, let’s celebrate Christmas in light of the grand story that God is telling throughout all of HIStory.

Merry Christmas!
